Wood Type & Firewood Quality
What does “kiln dried” mean?
Kiln drying is a controlled drying process where logs are dried using warm air circulation in a kiln.
This reduces the moisture content to a consistent level (below 20%), which produces logs that:
- light more easily
- burn more efficiently
- produce less smoke
- give stronger heat output
- create less soot and tar build-up
Kiln drying also helps keep quality consistent from bag to bag, compared to air-seasoned logs which can vary depending on weather and storage conditions.
Are your logs Ready to Burn certified?
Yes, our kiln dried firewood is Ready to Burn certified and dried to below 20% moisture, making it suitable for use in wood burning stoves, open fires and outdoor fire pits.
Ready to Burn certification means the logs have been independently verified to meet the legal moisture standard for burning in domestic appliances. This gives you confidence that your firewood is properly dried, safe to burn, and will perform as expected.
What moisture content are your logs?
Our kiln dried logs are dried to below 20% moisture. The majority of our logs sit at between 10% and 15%.
This is important because moisture content is one of the biggest factors in how well logs burn. Wet logs waste heat boiling off water before they can produce real heat, which often leads to:
- difficulty lighting
- lots of smoke
- poor heat output
- soot and tar build-up in your stove and flue
By keeping moisture content below 20%, our logs are easier to light, burn hotter, and give a cleaner burn. This produces a cleaner, more efficient burn with improved heat output and less smoke.
Why does moisture content matter?
Moisture content affects:
1) Heat output
Wet logs spend energy drying out as they burn, so you get less usable heat.
2) Smoke
The wetter the log, the smokier it burns — which can cause issues for neighbours and for your chimney.
3) Stove performance
Wet wood can lead to more tar deposits in the flue and glass blackening faster.
4) Ease of lighting
Dry logs catch quickly and help you build a fire much faster.
In short: dry logs are cheaper in the long run because you get more heat per log.
Do your logs smoke or spit?
All wood produces some smoke, especially when lighting a fire, but kiln dried logs produce far less smoke than wet or poorly seasoned logs.
If you notice excess smoke, it is usually caused by one of the following:
- restricted airflow in the stove
- closing the air vents too early
- a chimney that needs sweeping
- burning with insufficient kindling/heat at the start
We always recommend starting your fire with plenty of kindling and airflow, then adding logs once the fire is established.
Like any natural wood, occasional spitting can happen, but kiln drying reduces this significantly.
Do kiln dried logs burn longer?
Kiln dried logs generally burn more efficiently, and because they produce better heat output, they can feel like they burn “better” and “longer” than damp logs.
Burn time also depends heavily on:
- the hardwood species (Oak and Ash tend to burn longer than lighter hardwoods)
- log size
- stove settings and airflow
- how established the fire bed is
Our mixed hardwood is chosen specifically to give a good balance of strong heat + long burn time.
What type of wood do you supply?
We supply kiln dried mixed hardwood logs, mainly Ash and Oak, with occasional other local hardwoods depending on availability.
Ash and Oak are two of the most popular hardwoods for domestic burning because they provide:
- strong heat output
- good burn time
- consistent performance in stoves and open fires
We do not supply softwood in our bulk bags.
Will I receive the exact same mix every time?
The exact mix can vary slightly , however we only supply hardwood and maintain consistent quality standards.
You can expect:
- a hardwood-only bag
- a similar overall burn quality
- logs that are kiln dried and Ready to Burn certified
Do you supply softwood?
No, we specialise in kiln dried hardwood logs only.
Bulk Bag Size & Storage
What size logs are they?
Our logs are cut to 10 inches in length, with the width varying between 2 and 6 inches, which suits most wood burning stoves and open fires.
What size bulk bags do you sell?
We have the following sizes:
- 1m³ bag
- 0.85/0.9m³ bag
- 0.75m³ bag
How many logs are in a bulk bag?
Because firewood is a natural product, the exact number of logs per bag can vary depending on:
- log thickness
- log shape
- how the bag settles during transport
Instead of counting logs, we supply by volume, which is the most reliable way to measure firewood.
How should I store my logs?
For best results, store your logs in a dry, well-ventilated place and keep them off the ground where possible.
A log store with a roof and open sides is ideal. If storing outside, keep the logs covered from rain but allow airflow — avoid fully wrapping them in plastic as this can trap moisture.
Can you deliver directly into my log store?
We deliver to your driveway / kerbside as standard. If access allows, we’ll always do our best to help.

Sustainability & Sourcing
Where is your firewood sourced from?
All of our firewood is sourced from our farm at Welburn, near Kirkbymoorside.
By sourcing locally, we reduce transport miles and maintain quality control over the full process. From tree, to processing, to kiln drying and delivery.
Is your firewood sustainably sourced?
Yes. We only use sustainably managed hardwood as part of responsible woodland management.
This includes:
- selective felling
- thinning and regeneration work
- storm damaged trees
- ongoing management to maintain healthy woodland
Sustainable sourcing means the woodland is managed for long-term health, rather than being clear felled or over-harvested.
Do you fell trees specifically for firewood?
We use trees felled as part of woodland management, regeneration, and safety work, as well as storm damaged trees.
We do not clear woodland purely for firewood. Firewood production is part of a wider approach to managing woodland responsibly and maintaining long-term woodland health.
Do you use storm damaged trees?
Yes ,where suitable, we use storm-damaged trees as part of our supply.
Using storm damaged timber is a responsible way to make use of wood that would otherwise go to waste, while still producing high-quality firewood.
Do you use imported firewood?
No. We specialise in locally sourced firewood from our farm only.
This helps us:
- reduce transport miles
- keep quality consistent
- maintain better control over how the wood is processed and dried
It also means you know exactly where their firewood comes from.
Do you use any treated, painted or waste wood?
No, never.
We only supply clean, natural hardwood. We do not use:
- treated timber
- painted or stained wood
- pallets or waste wood
- construction timber
This is important for safety, air quality, and protecting your stove and chimney.
Why does local sourcing matter?
Local sourcing matters for a few reasons:
1) Quality control
We can control how the wood is processed, stored, and dried.
2) Lower transport miles
Less transport reduces environmental impact.
3) Reliable supply
Local supply is more dependable, especially during winter demand.
4) Supports local land management
Buying local firewood helps support sustainable woodland management in the area.
Is burning wood environmentally friendly?
When sourced responsibly, burning wood can be a renewable and sustainable fuel option.
Wood is part of the natural carbon cycle, trees absorb carbon dioxide as they grow, and that carbon is released when the wood is burned. The key is responsible woodland management and using properly dried wood to reduce smoke.
For the cleanest burn, always use:
- kiln dried logs (under 20% moisture)
- a well-maintained stove
- a regularly swept chimney
Does kiln drying make firewood less sustainable?
No. Kiln drying does use energy, but it also produces a far more efficient fuel.
Dry logs burn hotter and cleaner, meaning you often use less wood overall compared to burning damp logs. This also reduces smoke and improves stove performance.
To reduce waste, we also use wood offcuts that aren’t suitable for making into logs to fuel our kiln wherever possible, helping us make the most of every tree.
Do you replant trees?
Our woodland is managed for long-term health and regeneration.
This includes natural regeneration and replanting where needed, depending on the woodland area and management plan.
The goal is always to maintain healthy woodland for future years, rather than simply harvesting timber.
Do you use chemicals or additives in your logs?
No.
Our logs are 100% natural hardwood. We do not use any chemicals, treatments, or additives.
