We supply high-quality firewood sourced directly from our family farm in Welburn, Kirkbymoorside in the heart of Ryedale. Every log we sell comes directly from our own land, either from trees brought down by storm damage, or from woodland we manage carefully to keep it healthy.
Our story goes back generations.
After serving for 14 years in the British Army from 1939 to 1953, including active service throughout the Second World War and later deployment in Korea, our grandfather returned home to Welburn in search of a peaceful life. He made it his mission to plant as many trees as possible across the farm.
Over the next 30 years, he planted 12 separate woods with incredible vision, transforming what was once a fairly flat and open arable and grassland farm into the classic Yorkshire landscape you see today: working agriculture set against the backdrop of English woodland. It’s a scene we’re lucky to both live and work in, a farm that we’re proud to call home.
Today, that legacy and landscape is under threat.
Much of what he planted was Ash and Oak, both beautiful native British trees, but he could never have foreseen the challenges we face now. Ash dieback is a devastating disease affecting ash trees across the UK, and it is expected to kill up to 80% of the country’s ash (Woodland Trust). First identified in Europe around 30 years ago, it reached the UK in 2012. Unfortunately, it has now reached our farm too.
Over the past few years we have watched our woodland struggle and decline. It’s heartbreaking, but as custodians of this land we know we have to act.
We believe we have a responsibility to protect the biodiversity and ecological value these woods provide. Allowing them to die out would be disastrous, and it would also dishonour our grandfather’s legacy. The only long-term solution is to remove affected areas and replant with a stronger, more diverse mix of native British trees.
In late 2025 we launched our firewood business to fund this work properly, and to ensure it is carried out with care. By processing and selling logs from our own farm, we can manage felling sensitively. That means we can fell trees in a way that protects the woodland floor, supports regeneration, and leaves each site in the best possible condition to be replanted with a healthy mix of native species for generations to come.
When you buy logs from us, you’re not just getting quality local firewood, you’re supporting the restoration of the woods for the next generation.
